Hello there. My son just got his own car here in Indiana. Should I still add him to my auto insurance policy?

Hello there, May. To answer this question, you will first need to assess if he will only drive his own car and not any of yours anymore. If this is the case, then I think it will be all right to just get him a separate auto insurance policy for the car that he drives. However, if he will still be driving any other car in the household, you may want to consider adding him to the other auto insurance policies. I’m guessing you would rather not, though, so you can cut costs in the auto insurance of your other cars. But if you don’t list him as a driver in your other cars’ auto insurance policies, then he may not be covered in case he gets into an accident while borrowing one of your other vehicles. Don’t you think it would be safer to put him in, as well, just in case? Of course if he’s out of the state studying elsewhere, it may not be practical for you. I think it will be best if you discuss this with your son and explain to him the cost and benefits of each option before you decide to write him out of the policy entirely.
If you have more than one car under the same auto insurance company, I suggest you call your agent and ask for a discount from your premiums when renewal time comes around. I’m sure your auto insurance company in Indiana will appreciate the business that you give them by having more than one car insured with them.
