Reader’s Question:

What exactly is a supplemental health insurance policy? Should I buy one in Fort Wayne, IN?

Fort Wayne, IN

Good question, Billy.

It really depends on many factors like: your risk for serious illnesses, accidents, or hospitalization, your comfort zone and peace of mind in knowing that you have additional insurance coverage, and your income can afford having a supplemental coverage in Fort Wayne, IN.

Most supplemental health insurance policies serve as back up to your existing health insurance policy. Most offer cash benefits to defray medical expenses and other costs from sickness and injury.
As far as I know, supplemental health policies can be of three types. The first time is what’s called disease/condition-specified policies which offer cash benefit if you are diagnosed with a particular disease like cancer or HIV. Normally, payment can be made on a per day basis, although sometimes diseases-specific policies can offer benefits per medical procedure. There’s another one that’s called accident policies, which pay you or your family cash benefit if you happen to meet an accident. This type of policy though will be specific on the type of accident that will be eligible for claim. An example I can give you is like when a policyholder receives a serious injury like loss of a limb, he/she can receive a percentage from the full death benefit when it is a death or dismemberment policy. The third one of the supplemental health policies is the hospital indemnity policy, which offer cash benefit to the insured in the event of hospitalization. Payment can be done on a daily, weekly or monthly basis to the policyholder or the beneficiary.
